Moses Lake Chiefs

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Chiefs suffered a 12-0 loss to Bryant, Ark. in their first game of the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series Sunday night.

Dylan Hurt tossed a three-hit shutout against the host team in the five inning contest that was shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

“This was really uncharacteristic of the team,” coach Pete Doumit said. “Devin (Bishop) had first inning jitters on the mound. But he settled down, wriggled off the hook, and gave up just two runs over two innings. Unfortunately, our defense came unraveled in the third and they put six runs on the board to go up 8-0.”

Doumit pulled Bishop from the game after three innings of work, and put in Kamyrn Cerrillo to try and keep things from getting to far out of hand. But Bryant added four more in the top of the fourth to push the score to 12-0 and the rout was on.

Cerrillo was able to hold Bryant off the board in the top of the fifth as he fanned two of the four batters he faced in the inning.

Cerrillo, Cameron Duke, and Fernando Delgado singled for the only hits in the ball game for the Chiefs.

Six errors in the night for Moses Lake were the team’s undoing as it led to eight of the 12 runs for Arkansas.

“I told our kids after the game that we didn’t give our fans much to cheer about tonight,” Doumit said. “But I honestly believe we’ll improve over our next three games. Six errors on the night really limited our creativity.”

Cameron Duke was named player of the game for Moses Lake.

The Chiefs are back in action Monday night when they take on Baxter Springs, Kan. Game time is 8 p.m.
